The access to Exchange from external is now possible again. A distinction is made between these three variants:

  1. Webmail in the browser
  2. Mobile devices (ActiveSync)
  3. Other devices

Webmail in browser

The login is done via Shibboleth. You also need the two-factor authentication.

If you log in to Exchange from outside the TU Freiberg, you will be asked for the six-digit code after the Shibboleth login.

To do this, open the app on your smartphone and enter the code displayed there in the browser. Follow the instruction for two-factor authentication.

Note: The displayed code is only valid for a short time.

Mobile devices (ActiveSync)

You can access the Exchange mailbox again externally with an ActiveSync-enabled email client. To do this, you need a device share in the Self-Service portal.

ActiveSync-enabled clients include the Android and iPhone/iPad mail apps, as well as Windows Mail.

Step 1

First, add a new Exchange account.

  • Email address: vorname.nachname@kürzel.tu-freiberg.de
  • Login: Your user ID (e.g..e.g. ab12cdef)
  • Domain: ADDS
  • Password: Your new central password
  • Server: webmail.tu-freiberg.de
  • Port: 443
  • Security: SSL/TLS

After the successful configuration you will first see an empty mailbox with an email. In it you will find, among other things, the note that for security reasons mobile devices must be confirmed after the first login.

Step 2

Log in to the Self-Service Portal and click on the tile "Mobile Devices (Exchange)".

In the "Your mobile devices" overview, all devices waiting for approval are displayed, as well as the device history.

Step 3

If it is your device, click on "Confirm device". After that, there will be a security prompt. Confirm it with "Yes, this is my device".

Note: The release is only possible from the campus network.

Should you not be able to assign a device listed there, click on "Remove device". A security prompt will appear here as well. Confirm it with "Not my device".

Note: If you find an unknown device in the overview, your central password may be compromised. In that case, we advise you to change it immediately.

Other clients

If you want to access Exchange with email clients that do not support ActiveSync, you can only do this externally via a VPN connection. Non-ActiveSync-capable clients are, for example, Microsoft Outlook or Evolution EWS.

Unfortunately, there is currently no way to secure access via other clients in a similar way as is possible with two-factor authentication or device sharing with ActiveSync.

Microsoft has held out the prospect of a solution in mid-2022. So far, however, it has remained with the announcement. As soon as it is technically possible, we will endeavor to make this access available again.
