The Graduate and Research Academy (GraFA) is the central institution for doctoral students and young researchers at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The focus of our work ranges from the administrative processes of doctorates and habilitations to the support of academic staff.

74 doctoral graduates and 5 postdoctoral lecturers were honoured at the farewell ceremony
Expertise, scientific curiosity and personal perseverance: these qualities were demonstrated by the 74 doctoral graduates and five postdoctoral lecturers honoured at a ceremony held on 8 November 2025 in the Alte Mensa of TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Freiberg's status as an internationally networked research location was also evident: Thirty-five of the doctoral graduates came from abroad, hailing from over a dozen different countries, including Austria, France, Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Cuba, Vietnam, Canada, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Poland, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, India, Albania and Croatia. New blog post with Madlen Grau: “I arrived with many questions. I returned with a much clearer orientation”
Madlen Grau is an economics researcher and is writing her doctoral thesis on how small and medium-sized enterprises can be managed effectively in the context of scarce resources and increasing sustainability requirements. ‘Can we control the climate? Opportunities and challenges of geoengineering’ – recording of the 35th Krüger-Kolloquium now available.
The 35th Krüger Colloquium took place on 27 November 2025. Professor Manfred Wendisch, Head of the Institute of Meteorology and Professor of Atmospheric Radiation at the University of Leipzig, presented various geoengineering methods and explained how they work and what their possible side effects might be. During the final panel discussion, he participated in a conversation with Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christos G. Aneziris and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Simon Glöser-Chahoud, addressing the issues, challenges and limitations of technical feasibility. Click here to watch the recording.
Apply Now: KlarText-Preis for Science Communication
The KlarText-Prize for Science Communication recognises PhD graduates who can explain their research clearly and precisely without using jargon. Awarded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, the prize recognises outstanding examples of successful science communication. Participants present their dissertation in a way that is accessible to a general audience. Two formats are available: a Klartext article or an infographic that visually explains the content. Applications are open to researchers who completed their PhD in 2024 or 2025 and conducted research in one of the following fields: Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Neurosciences, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics (including related disciplines). Applications must be submitted in German. Nationality, institution or current career stage are irrelevant.
