Research and teaching mine
A mine between tradition and future
Welcome to our website. The Freiberg Mining Academy was founded in 1765 with the aim of scientifically analysing the exploration, extraction and processing of raw materials in order to improve the productivity and profitability of mining. At the same time, the aim was to train specialists in these fields to apply this new knowledge in mining.
What could be better suited for teaching and research if not a mine itself?
For many decades, the knowledge of the Bergakademie was applied directly in the Saxon mining industry, among others. Immediately following the closure of Freiberg mining in 1913, the Bergakademie stepped up its efforts to take over parts of the Himmelfahrt mine for teaching and research.

Location advantage of the Bergakademie
The location advantage of the Bergakademie is based, among other things, on the existence of a mine that is used for practical training of students and research.
Learning from tradition in order to be prepared for the future - that is our motto. The aim of the management and staff of the training mine is to integrate mining operations more efficiently into teaching and to offer the institutes new opportunities for utilisation. Graduates with continuous work experience in the training mine appreciate this experience.
