We successfully moved the entire backup system from 18 to 21 January. It is now in its final location in the IT security cell and is available to all users again. The normal data backup processes have started.
In the space of four days, we moved the entire backup system from its interim location in the Clemens-Winkler building to its final location in the IT security cell. The move was necessary due to short-term construction work at the previous location. We were able to put the system back into operation at 3 pm.
Costly transport
The tape library is 5.50 metres long in total and is operated by robotic arms. The dismantling, transport and reassembly were particularly complex. The mechanical stresses during transport or imprecise installation of the library could quickly lead to serious problems during operation. But the server, with its almost 200 hard disks, was also quite a challenge. Support from the maintenance company SVA and experienced IBM technicians was therefore absolutely essential.
Smooth process
We coordinated all the people involved to ensure that everything ran smoothly. In view of the current situation with snowfall and the ongoing pandemic, some special features also had to be taken into account. Together with the TUBAF transport service, URZ employees took care of the tape transport of the approx. 1,400 tapes with a data volume of approx. 8 petabytes to the new location. The company SVA transported the server. IBM transported the tape library to the new permanent location approx. 500 metres away with the help of a freight forwarder. Due to the snowfall, the route could not be blocked by parked cars. For this reason, the access road to the rear building complex of the Gellert building was closed throughout the morning of 20 January.
Acknowledgement
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for the smooth running of the event. Special thanks go to the Chemical Institutes, in particular to Mr Steffen Braun, the head of the technical department. When our backup system was delivered, the IT security cell had not yet been completed. We were then unbureaucratically provided with suitable premises until the current move.
