We would like to welcome you to our university. To make your start as easy as possible, we have put together some information for you.

User account

You will find the access data in the enrolment documents sent to you.

Note: You must activate your account and change the initial password. You can do this via the provisional user administration.

If you have forgotten your password, please contact the Service Desk of the URZ. Your password can be reset to the initial password there.

Note: If the initial password is no longer available, you must visit the URZ in person (Room 3.04 - Mr Frost).

If you already have an account, it will simply continue to run. You don't need to do anything else. Please contact the IT Service Desk (servicedesk [at] tu-freiberg [dot] de).

If you have received a second, additional account, please submit a ticket to the IT Service Desk. We will then combine the two into one.

You can request a guest account for such cases. We will convert your account into a guest account, which will allow you to retain access to your central resources for a certain period of time.

To do this, please send an email to the IT Service Desk (servicedesk [at] tu-freiberg [dot] de).

Campus network

Eduroam Wi-Fi is available on the entire campus. To make the correct settings on your end device, please follow the corresponding instructions.

Note: Please pay attention to the version of your operating system! On an Android 11 system, there is a different installation recommendation than on a lower version.

You can also access the campus data network on the move (Eduroam or at home). We offer VPN access for this. In our guides you will find help on how to configure access on your end device.

Note: You must first register a second factor within the TU. To do this, you can go to a computer pool, for example, or alternatively visit the computer centre in person.

The computer centre is not responsible for providing Wi-Fi in the hall of residence. This service is provided by the StuNet team.

Collaboration

We offer a cloud based on Nextcloud. Files can be edited together and exchanged easily via this.

Each user receives their own home drive, on which up to 1 TB of storage space is available for university documents.

You can integrate this network drive with the help of the step-by-step guide.

Teaching

OPAL is a Saxony-wide online platform for academic teaching and learning. The Education Portal Saxony is managed by the Media Centre and offers forums, blogs, wikis, virtual classrooms and much more. Participation in courses is coordinated centrally via OPAL

.

The computer centre operates its own BigBlueButton cluster for video conferencing. This enables video conferencing for teaching as well as project meetings.

Software

The University Computer Centre provides software centrally for teaching and research in the form of server licences and campus licences. In particular, framework agreements should be emphasised here, which enable private use in addition to business use (e.g. Microsoft state contract).

Students can use the product Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus free of charge via the state contract (CampusSachsen). The subscription requires a new registration on the website for authentication every 180 days at the latest. Otherwise, documents can only be read in read-only mode.

Communication

As a new student, you will automatically receive an e-mail address. You can access this via Horde-Webmail.

There is a university info distribution list (UNIINFO-L; only accessible via the university network), which can be used to communicate information from/to TU members.

You can receive these messages by e-mail or subscribe to the RSS feed.

We provide a central Matrix instance for chats via instant messaging. All members of the university can use this to communicate securely.

Questions and problems about IT services?

You can contact the IT Service Desk at the URZ if you have any IT questions or problems. This is the central point of contact for all users. Simply send an email to servicedesk [at] tu-freiberg [dot] de (servicedesk[at]tu-freiberg[dot]de). If you have critical problems, you are welcome to visit us on site (URZ, room 2.05) or call us on +49 3731 39-1818.
