The SCD-050 sputter coater from Bal-Tec is a compact, high-precision device for creating ultra-fine conductive coatings on non-conductive samples, particularly for preparing for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The device operates under a vacuum of 5 x 10-2 hPa in which argon is ionised. The resulting ions are accelerated by an electric field onto a metal target cathode, whereby metal atoms are knocked out of the surface. The SCD-050 has a range of different mountable targets made of aluminium, gold, gold-palladium, copper, platinum and titanium, whose atoms condense evenly on the sample after being knocked out and form a thin, conductive layer.
A special feature of the SCD-050 is its space-saving design with all operating elements and displays in a single console, whereby the maximum sample diameter is limited to 10 cm by the device's sputter chamber. Thanks to the freely selectable and optimally adjustable sputter parameters, very high-resolution films can be produced. Operation is particularly user-friendly thanks to a one-button automatic system. The pre-settable and permanently stored parameters enable reproducible operation. The desired film thickness can be precisely preselected using a film thickness curve in combination with constant sputter parameters and the correct height setting of the adjustable sample table. The foldable sputtering head with integrated piston damper and quick-release system also allows the film targets to be changed quickly and easily, making the workflow efficient and convenient.
