The Schlenkline from Vaccubrand is a laboratory device consisting of a glass pipe with several connections, which in turn are fitted with valves. It enables reaction vessels to be connected to either a vacuum or an inert gas source (e.g. nitrogen or argon) and flushed in order to protect the air- and moisture-sensitive substances inside. This allows chemicals to be handled in the absence of atmospheric oxygen and water vapour and reactions to be carried out under controlled conditions. Schlenklines are widely used in organic and organometallic chemistry as well as in solid-state chemistry.
