Underwater research at TUBAF and how the University Library is helping
Research doesn’t just take place in the lab or at a desk – sometimes you have to dive down to do it.
At the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, scientific diving is firmly established within the geosciences and engineering disciplines.
The “Scientific Diving Centre” (YouTube video) at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is the world’s first certified training centre for scientific diving in accordance with ISO 8804-1/2.
In addition, a new diving container was acquired this year – a further building block in Freiberg’s diverse and vibrant study and research landscape.

SUBmarIne – Underwater structural inspection using robots
Most recently, the “Scientific Diving Centre”, in collaboration with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Process and Energy Engineering and the Faculty of Applied Sciences – Mathematics, Computer Science, Robotics have recently developed a method for detecting damage to underwater structures. Using an underwater robot and artificial intelligence, any damaged areas identified are automatically projected onto 3D models of the underwater structures and analysed. A fine example of how modern technology and research go hand in hand.

The University Library as a partner in scientific diving
With a diverse range of information resources, the University Library supports scientific diving at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
It offers an up-to-date collection of printed and digital media, covering both the interdisciplinary requirements of scientific diving and the various fields of professional diving.
The collection ranges from diving manuals to titles on specialised applications of diving in the earth and life sciences, as well as in geoarchaeology.
Thus, a degree programme in Freiberg offers, alongside many other advantages, the opportunity to ‘dive in’. Anyone enrolling on one of the numerous degree programmes offered by Faculty 3 – Earth Sciences, Geotechnical Engineering and Mining or Faculty 4 – Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering and Energy Technology can access the most important and up-to-date textbooks and standard works at the University Library – both digitally and in print. In this way, we create the ideal conditions for academic success and personal scholarly development.
