The site license for the reference management software Citavi expires on 30 November 2026. It was extended one final time last year for various reasons – quality, data protection and costs.
As of 1 December 2026, existing Citavi projects can no longer be accessed without further action.
This affects everyone currently working with Citavi. The deadline is particularly relevant for students who are writing a thesis or have collected literature for upcoming semesters.
The following options are available:
- Import existing Citavi projects into Zotero. A step-by-step guide is available in OPAL.
- Obtaining a personal Citavi connection licence. This is subject to a fee and must be paid for by the user.
The University Library recommends switching to Zotero. The software is permanently free of charge, open source and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux – including after graduation and regardless of university affiliation.
