A workshop report

The Freiberg University Library is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to simplify the cataloguing and classification of specialist literature.

The workshop report presents ALIMA (AI-powered Library Indexing and Metadata Assignment), a tool that uses large language models to generate keywords and automate the assignment to existing standard data. Despite challenges such as hallucinations and complex classification structures, ALIMA shows promising results and already supports the work of subject librarians.

ALIMA is currently being further developed through iterative development cycles with the subject librarians; the current status of the software can be found in the public repository.
