Escape Room: "Escape our Lab"
Something strange is happening in our laboratories: our busy scientists have disappeared from the face of the earth. Decipher confusing lab notes, gain access to locked rooms, and find out what happened to our scientists by completing their experiments!
In this escape adventure, you can playfully experience what it means to be a materials scientist. Exciting experiments will give you special insights into the mysterious world of materials and substances that often surround you unconsciously in everyday life.
Who can do it? - Suitable from grade 10 to Dr. title holder, with variable levels of difficulty (group size ideally 4 - 8 people).
How much time does the mission take? - approx. 60 to 120 minutes of pure playing time.
What tools are required? - Interest in science, team spirit, and enthusiasm for puzzles.
Interested? - Please contact schimpf [at] iww [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de (Christian Schimpf) and clarify further details!
This escape adventure is offered by the Institute of Materials Science at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. It is non-commercial and cannot be booked by private individuals. Appointments are only given to educational institutions and their members. Use is free of charge.
School competition 2024
Every year, the institutes of Faculty 5 organize the "Student Competition". This year's motto is
Sinking ships: the last to sink is the best to sink.
Do you enjoy engineering challenges, enjoy practical work, and are looking forward to competing with schools from all over Germany? Then the school competition is the right place for you!
The aim here is to solve a task set by us as well as possible in individual or group work. If you manage to do this, one of our prizes and a taster day in our laboratories may await you.
Details on the conditions of participation, registration, rules, and prizes can be found at tu.freiberg.de/schuelerwettbewerb.
The deadline for entries is 22 April 2024.
The student competition is an initiative of the institutes of Faculty 5 at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The competition has been supported since 2014 by the foundation "Saxony. Land of Engineers" foundation since 2014.

Night of Science | Campus Days
The Institute of Materials Science is represented at the Night of Science of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg with a wide range of lectures, demonstrators, and hands-on experiments:
- 25.05.2024 | from approx. 16.00 hrs | Location to be announced
During the Campus Days organized by the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, some laboratories of the Institute of Materials Science can be visited as part of laboratory tours/campus tours:
- 25.05.2024 | 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. | Location to be announced
School visits
We offer to hold experimental guest lectures or practicals at schools as part of project days or special events. With our lectures and experiments, we offer an interesting and lively insight into the behavior of materials and show the resulting application possibilities that make every material something special. We also provide an overview of the content and concept of the materials-based degree programs at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In terms of content, there are good links to the school subjects of physics and chemistry, as well as to subjects with the topics of mechanical engineering, construction, and materials testing.
If you are interested or have any questions, please contact ...
We offer teacher training courses with materials science content together with the Institute of Materials Engineering at TUBAF on an annual basis. We are aimed at teachers specializing in physics, chemistry or mechanical engineering, construction and/or materials testing, as well as related subjects.
Support for
The Institute of Materials Science supports many other TU Bergakademie Freiberg programs for pupils and teachers. These include:
- the IWT's Science Meets School student laboratory
- the MINT(EC) Camp
- the Materials Week of the Student University
