Large bundles of rock thin sections

The Saxon universities in Freiberg, Leipzig and Dresden, the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology, the Senckenberg Natural History Collections Dresden and Wismut GmbH have extensive stocks of microscopic rock thin sections. Digital availability would considerably facilitate and, above all, expand the use of the analogue collections. The technical requirements are already in place with the automated thin section scanner "ZEISS Axioscan 7" and the powerful image management system "TUBAFmedia" at the university library in Freiberg.

The eighth workshop "Digitisation in geoscientific collections" will discuss metadata concepts and applications based on the experiences of the sub-project "Digitisation of teaching materials for mineralogy, petrology and crystallography" (sponsor: Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre), in which selected thin section suites were scanned.

Representatives from universities, museums, companies and government agencies are invited to an interdisciplinary exchange, as are representatives from computer science and engineering.
