Teaching4you - A path from STEM studies to teaching without detours

The challenges of the teacher shortage are particularly noticeable in the TU Freiberg catchment area. This is where TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) wants to contribute to a solution with the "Lehramt4you" programme.

Teachers have always found a way into the teaching profession after graduating from TU Freiberg. However, this was often rocky and full of hurdles. The legal requirements are strict. Sometimes they had to spend years catching up on their professional qualifications for the recognition of a second teaching subject while working.

Despite this, the desire to pass on their passion for their subjects and their knowledge to the next generation and to stay in the region remained strong.

This is exactly where Teaching4you comes in. The optimised STEM degree programmes are not teaching degree programmes. In coordination with the Saxon State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, the defined technical requirements for lateral entry are comprehensively fulfilled. This means that our graduates can start their traineeship immediately without having to go through the hassle of studying part-time in order to catch up. Initial teaching experience is possible while studying. In addition, students can systematically build up pedagogical skills by completing our extracurricular support programme.

The accompanying programme aims to support students who are still primarily concentrating on their technical education as part of their regular STEM studies by providing them with pedagogical experience.

Our teaching-optimised degree programmes

For Lehramt4you, two degree programmes (B.Sc. Applied Natural Science and B.Sc. Applied Computer Science) have been optimised so that the specialist training for lateral entry into the secondary school teaching profession in Saxony is complete. The Applied Science degree programme offers a combination of Physics/Chemistry and the Applied Computer Science degree programme offers a combination of Mathematics/Computer Science. Further degree programmes are to follow in the future.

Practical relevance and regional networking

An essential component of Teaching4you is the close cooperation with regional schools. Even during their studies, students can gain valuable experience and prepare for the teaching profession through our accompanying programme for educational skills development. The accompanying programme offers valuable insights into working with children and young people during the Bachelor's degree and enables students to gain their first (paid) professional experience in education alongside their Master's degree. In addition, the programme offers the opportunity to reflect on experiences in case supervision groups and to discuss them in the group. A 5 ECTS module "Fundamentals of teaching skills development" rounds off the programme.

A clear study concept

A sample study plan helps students to select the required modules from the outset and thus optimally prepare them for a possible entry into the teaching profession. Valuable insights into the reality of teaching can already be gained during the degree programme through work shadowing and pedagogically supervised teaching experience.

Target group

Teaching4you is aimed at students and doctoral candidates with a strong interest in STEM subjects who do not yet want to commit to a specific career during their studies. In particular, students with regional ties who have already gained initial teaching experience or have a strong interest in working with children and young people can find meaningful and future-proof career prospects in their home region through this programme.

Scientific support

TUBAF is taking a completely new approach with its teaching-optimised degree programmes. To ensure that the entry into the teaching profession is successful and that students receive individual support, our innovative approach is scientifically monitored by the Centre for Teacher Education, School and Vocational Training Research (ZLSB) at TU Dresden. This means that improvements can be made at any time during the course of the project, particularly in the accompanying programme, which will benefit the students.
