Are you planning a research stay abroad? Would you like to take part in an international summer school? Or present your research at an international conference? TU Bergakademie Freiberg can support you!

The funding programme for the internationalisation of doctoral studies, postdoctoral research and habilitations provides doctoral candidates with funding for their first steps on the international stage of their academic careers. Gain international experience and sharpen your research profile!

The programme is intended for:

  • Habilitation candidates.

The following can be funded:

  • international research stays and unpaid internships in industry abroad for the purpose of the doctorate, postdoc phase and habilitation,

FAQs on mobility funding

Application deadlines

The deadline for the call is the last day of each month.

Applications can be submitted consecutively. However, the day on which the application is submitted must in any case be before the start of the requested trip. It is possible to apply for a trip early.

At the committee meeting, the selection committee will consider all applications that have been submitted in full by the last day of the previous month, regardless of the planned travel period.

If documents have to be submitted later for reasons for which the applicants are not responsible and the committee members still have sufficient time to consider them in their preparation, such an application can also be included in the selection decision. If the preparation time is too short, a decision on the application will be made at the subsequent meeting of the selection committee in the following month.

Incomplete applications are still considered to have been submitted. This is particularly important if there is a short lead time between the application and the start of the trip. Sometimes, for example, you have a place on the waiting list for a summer school and are admitted at very short notice. We take into account the fact that it is sometimes difficult for applicants to influence when they receive a letter of endorsement, invitation or confirmation. Even if the meeting of the selection committee in such a case does not take place until after the start of the trip, an application can also be approved retroactively in individual cases if all eligibility requirements are met.

We endeavor to ensure that a decision is announced by the middle of the following month at the latest. However, there may also be months where this is delayed until the end of the following month. It is therefore advisable to submit the application as early as possible.

In this case, you run the risk of having to raise the funds yourself if your application is not approved or only partially approved.

Application documents

The application documents to be submitted can be found in the monthly call for applications, for example on our blog or via the link above.

Report and Sharing of Experiences

The report should be short and concise and must be submitted within 8 weeks of completion of the measure. It is intended for the selection committee, which decides on the allocation of funds.

Please state the objectives you wanted to achieve with the measure and briefly reflect on how the measure contributed to the achievement of the objectives. List the most important results for your academic development, the development of your network and for the development of your career prospects and, if applicable, for your development as a leader. In addition, briefly report on how you have shared your experiences with other early career researchers (see next question).

The scope of the report corresponds to the type and scope of the funded measure. The report for a two-day conference with poster presentation can be presented in a meaningful way on one page. For a research stay lasting several weeks, three to four pages are desirable. Photos are welcome (please pay attention to image rights).

The aim of this measure is to make the culture of internationality of science at TUBAF even more tangible for young scientists and to raise awareness of alternative career paths in science after the doctorate. Therefore, as part of the funding, an experience report for other doctoral candidates / postdocs or a small video contribution for the program's website is planned.

You can implement this through a presentation, for example in your own research group, in an informal setting or at the accompanying program of a doctoral colloquium, at an event of the Doctoral Council or the GraFA or by creating a small video contribution for the program's website. We leave the form up to you. Soon you will also find a list of events on the GraFA website and you may even be able to get tips on how to make the most of your stay for your development before your own trip.

The main aim is to inspire others and arouse interest in your own stay abroad. You can and should also share your discoveries about alternative paths in science after your doctorate with other colleagues in this way. Please let us know when and how you would like to hold this event – a photo for the documentation is also welcome. Science communication is an important aspect of your future career, in science as well as in a science-related field.
