Am 04. Mai fand unter Leitung von Prof. Nagel das Symposium “Towards a safe nuclear waste repository – assessment of barrier integrity, geoscientific, technological, societal and regulatory challenges and approaches” statt.

Das Symposium wurde im Rahmen der Jahrestagung der Europäischen Geophysikalischen Union (EGU) gemeinsam mit Prof. Klaus-Jürgen Röhlig (TU Clausthal), Dr. Jobst Maßmann (BGR) sowie Dr. Axel Liebscher und Dr. Claudia Schulz (BASE) durchgeführt.

Wegen der aktuellen Reise- und Kontaktbeschränkungen durch COVID-19 wurde die gesamte Tagung in den virtuellen Raum verlegt. Die Beteiligung am Symposium war mit zeitweise über 70 Teilnehmern aus den verschiedensten Zeitzonen von Ostasien, über Europa bis in die USA sehr erfreulich. Die Vortragenden waren per Video zugeschaltet und konnten ihre Vorträge life präsentieren. Diskussionen und Rückfragen waren sowohl direkt über Audio und Video möglich, als auch in textbasierten Chatfenstern.

On May 4, the symposium “Towards a safe nuclear waste repository – assessment of barrier integrity, geoscientific, technological, societal and regulatory challenges and approaches” took place under the direction of Prof. Nagel.

The symposium was carried out within the framework of the annual conference of the European Geophysical Union (EGU) together with Prof. Klaus-Juergen Rohlig (TU Clausthal), Dr. Jobst Massmann (BGR) as well as Dr. Axel Liebscher and Dr. Claudia Schulz (BASE).

Due to the current travel and contact restrictions due to COVID-19, the entire meeting was moved to the virtual space. Participation in the symposium was very pleasing with more than 70 participants from different time zones from East Asia, across Europe to the USA. The speakers were connected via video and were able to present their presentations live. Discussions and questions were possible both directly via audio and video, as well as in text-based chat windows.
