The first diving camp 2025 of the Scientific Diving Centre (SDC) of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg at Lake Senftenberg was opened with a powerful kick of the fins. This is not about holidays or coral reefs - but about underwater research at the highest level.
Under the motto "Scientific diving: Freiberg trains for underwater research", students, researchers and external specialists come together to be trained in the practice of scientific diving. The SDC is one of the few institutions in Germany that provides in-depth training in accordance with international standards for working in the wet element - interdisciplinary, application-orientated and recognised worldwide.
The camp focuses on key methods such as sediment and water sampling, precise measurement techniques, 3D photogrammetry, underwater mapping and the management of emergency situations under water. The training is carried out in accordance with the new ISO 8804-1 /-2 - a standard that the Freiberg centre not only meets, but also helped to develop.
Preparations for the major diving excursion in September are already underway with the camp in Senftenberg. Dives, procedures and communication channels are being trialled, rehearsed and perfected step by step - so that everything will be just right underwater when the scientific mission begins.
