This module is carried out as part of a 10 - 14-day diving expedition. Prerequisite for participation in the expedition is the successful completion of the module ‘Scientific Diving I’, a license as a recreational diver (CMAS** or a corresponding cross over to CMAS** according to the equivalence list) as well as a valid diving fitness certificate.
The scientific content of the module is based on the location of the diving camp excursion, the student's personal skills and their degree program. The topic to be worked on can be of an engineering or geoscientific, water chemistry, (micro-)biological or metrological nature. The focus of the work can also be on underwater communication, documentation and the management of subaquatic research.
Students should demonstrate that they can work independently and as part of a team on underwater scientific tasks. This includes dive planning, a structured work concept and complete documentation under and above water.
Qualification: The ‘Advanced Scientific Diver’ certificate can be obtained by passing the theoretical knowledge and practical skills test in accordance with ISO 8804-2.

Qualification theses as part of the scientific diving excursion
Our scientific diving excursions offer students the opportunity to complete a qualification thesis (student research project, bachelor's thesis, project work or master's thesis) in a practical environment. Scientific issues can be investigated directly on site and researched underwater using modern methods.
Thanks to the interdisciplinary cooperation between geologists, biologists, chemists, engineers and environmental scientists, a wide range of research topics are possible. Possible focal points include:
- geological investigations
- Mapping and analysis of marine habitats
- Investigation of invasive species
- Aquatic ecology and environmental monitoring
- Development of technical solutions for underwater research
If you are interested in combining your thesis with one of our excursions, please contact Thomas [dot] Grab [at] sdc [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de for further information. We will be happy to support you in finding and planning a topic!
