Workshop at Forschungszentrum Jülich: “Challenges for the Direct and Indirect Supply of Raw Materials for the Energy Transition”
Extreme events such as the blockade of the Suez Canal, supply bottlenecks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia–Ukraine war have highlighted the vulnerability of cross-border value chains. Accordingly, concerns are rising about potential future risks to the feasibility of planned transformation processes. This includes, in particular, the transformation of the German and European energy system (energy transition). In this context, there are uncertainties in Europe both regarding the direct supply of primary and secondary raw materials (e.g., green hydrogen) and the indirect supply of raw materials embedded in intermediate products (e.g., magnets or microchips).
The workshop will identify and classify various risks to supply chains and possible options for risk reduction. This will be supported by an interdisciplinary exchange involving internationally renowned scientists, including Prof. Per Fredriksson (University of Louisville, USA), Prof. Alexander Golub (American University, Washington, USA), Prof. Dr. Matthias Grajewski (Aachen University of Applied Sciences), Prof. Anil Markandya (BC3, Bilbao, Spain), and Prof. Vivekananda Mukherjee (Birla Institute of Technology & Science, India).
An interdisciplinary expert exchange will contribute to this, involving, among others, the following internationally renowned scientists:
