  • Or: International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (academic test) with a minimum of band 6.5

A waiver for the test of English language proficiency will be granted to students with English as mother tongue, and may be granted where the previous education was completely in English language. The English test can be taken in form of an oral exam in Freiberg. This will take place before the letter of admission to the study programme can be issued.

  • Admission to the programme is  competitive: of around 350-500 applications we receive each year, only some 150-200 are longlisted to send us complete application packages for a more careful review of formal documents. Of those applicants, only approximately 80-100 are shortlisted for final negotiation on admission. At the end, some 15 to 25 students enrol each year.

Deadline for applications

Starting early January to 15 April for a start in October each year
  • This deadline is early, but it is necessary to allow enough time to apply for visas.
    • Late applications can, in individual cases, also be accepted, based onm two conditions: (i) late applications have to be complete (see checklist); (ii) that you can estimate that ypou will receive a residence permit (Visa) early enough so that you can be in Freiberg for the enrolment deadline in mid-October (coming late is no option). Send late applications to the programme director Professor Dr Johannes Stephan.
  • The program usually starts every academic year with the winter semester (October).
    • If you have a German language level of at least C1, the otherwise compulsory German courses are not required and you can also start your studies in April (summer semester). A complete application  (see checklist) must be submitted directly to the Dean of Studies, Prof. Dr. Johannes Stephan.
  • All application documents should be complete. If the English test or the analytical test has not yet been completed, an application can still be started. The missing document must then be submitted by the time of enrollment. Enrolment with incomplete documents is not possible.

The process of application

  • The process starts with registration in the application portal as an applicant, where you provide some personal information and generate an electronic account for the application (which you confirm with your email). In the second step, you select the desired degree program and tell us about your previous academic achievements.
  • You can expect emails at each step to inform you about the status of your application. Read them carefully and proceed as advised, otherwise the process may come to a grinding hold without further notification.
    • In case of unresolved questions, please refer to the zulassungsbuero [at] zuv [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de (admission office) via Email, includiung your application number.

Information for exchange students

  • They can, however, earn credit points by successfully taking the examinations and they can apply for recognition and credit transfer at their home university
  • Formally, guest students do not need any of the special program-related admission criteria (English test, analytical test, professional experience, etc.). However, it is advisable to use these as a guide to assess whether participation in the interactive courses at Master's level is beneficial
