Proof of topical/analytical proficiency using GMAT or GRE

The analytical test, either GMAT or GRE, is compulsory (there are waivers for students who have already passed a full university degree at the TU Freiberg or students of double degree partner universities UPEC and CUGB, who run their own tests).

A good GMAT with 570 points for the verbal and quantitative sections (Programme code 123-ZK-23) or a good GRE General Test with 305 points for the verbal and quantitative reasoning sections (DI Code 8233) are strong arguments for you as an applicant. A result below this will not automatically exclude your candidatureship, but weakens your profile. The analytical test is an expensive investment for you, but we trust you understand that we need this. 

German norms and values do not easily agree with the concept of flexibility, but we try to evalue your application package as a whole. Here are some hints:

  • most importantly, the rule-maker intended to secure a minimum level of verbal and analytical abilities. Each ability is a sine-qua-non in its own right to follow lectures and tutorials, and the minimum points were designed to require successful students to belong close to the 50 percentile of all test takers. This means that we are looking for a good balance between verbal and quantitative sections of the test: an insufficient test result with extraordinarily high quantitative points and correspondingly extraordinarily low verbal points is hence of a lesser quality for us than an equally insufficient overall test result but with a better balance between verbal and quantitative parts
  • the quality of the analytical writing part of the test may signal that the questions in verbal and quantitative parts did not allow the candidate to fully exploit her or his potentials that nevertheless exist
  • a series of insufficient test results that however shows an upward trend in all sections suggest that the intention of the rule-maker of selecting students that have a high probability to be successful in the programme is fulfilled: a further test will probably result in sufficient points, so the resources for yet another test can be allocated more effectively somewhere else. A significant divergence between analytical test results and the performance of the student in class (tutorial presentations, active contributions in lectures and tutorials of other students, etc.) may signal that the student just does not agree with the environment of the analytical test whilst still being a successful student

None of these criteria estabish a right to be granted flexibility. This will be evaluated at the discretion of the admission committee.
