Section 4: Questions about living in a foreign country / in Freiberg
There is a mentoring programme ("buddy"): all students are picked up at the station upon arrival and assisted throughout their first steps in Freiberg with such issues as accommodation, enrolment at the university, and other administrative matters.
Additionally, the university runs an international student office called Alexander von Humboldt. Their task is to assist foreign students in Freiberg.
The University has a so-called "Studentenwerk" that runs student dormitories. Please find information on their web-site: Studentenwerk Freiberg. The costs for a dormitory room are around EUR 150-350 per month, including all costs with the exception of supplementary offers (e.g. telephone).
We try to help students with accommodation, but cannot guarantee places.
If you choose to search yourself, or if the dormitory administration is unable to provide accommodation for you, please visit one of the following:

- Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft (SWG), Freiberg, Beuststraße 1
In any case, your "buddy" here in Freiberg will help you finding accommodation. Landlords in Freiberg are quite accustomed to house foreign students.
All students enrolled in German universities (incl. foreign students) have to show evidence that they have a health insurance throughout the time that they are registered as a student of our university, which is until the certificate is issued. The conditional acceptance letter states that the student is required to obtain medical insurance prior to registration.
More information can be found on the internet pages of the International Centre under "Before Moving to Freiberg".
This depends on your country of origin. When you apply for a visa, the German embassy will be able to tell you exactly.
If you plan to stay a semester abroad in a country where health insurance is not required, then do consider to take out a private insurance (not the usual public insurance). They do not cost significantly more, but you have the possibility to put them into a sleeping mode whilst you do not reside in Germany. This can save you a lot of money.

Freiberg is a city in Saxony located 30 kilometres west of Dresden (not to be confused with Freiburg in Baden-Wurttemberg). There is a fast train connection to Dresden and back.
The old medieval town center has remained virtually unchanged, and was not destroyed during world war II. Most of the building are renovated now, and form an enjoyable atmosphere for living. Many pubs, restaurants, a big movie theatre, a small, but good theatre, sports clubs etc. offer everything for an exciting and relaxing sparetime.
Foreign students tell us that the population of Freiberg think positively about foreign students. The university with its currently around 4000 students plays an important role in the city of Freiberg. The share of foreign students amounts to roughly 40 per cent, you are able to socialise both with German students and students from a number of different countries.
