Living Costs

Living in Freiberg is inexpensive compared to other major German cities. The amount of money you actually need a month also depends on your own lifestyle.

Monthly rent is likely to be your largest fixed expense in Germany (see the "Housing Costs" section below).

Applicants from outside the European Union must demonstrate that they have enough money to live in Germany. To do this, they must provide proof of financial means when applying for a visa. A blocked account must contain sufficient funds to cover the costs incurred during the planned stay in Germany. Other proof of financing may additionally be provided in the visa application process (please check with your embassy/consulate). Proof of financial means is also required when applying for a residence permit at the place of study.

Housing Costs

Freiberg offers attractive opportunities for international students seeking an affordable and comfortable place to live. In addition to student dormitories, there are also private landlords and shared accommodations that offer affordable housing. Rent prices are moderate compared to other German cities. Additionally, you benefit from the proximity to the university and the comforts of the city without having to bear high living costs on the side.

The Studentenwerk Freiberg (Student Union) and the city of Freiberg offer cost-effective and adequate housing options for students. By the way, according to a recent ranking of rental costs (German only), students in Freiberg spend the lowest amount on average for housing

A shared flat (WG) on campus is available for an average of 250 euros per month (including utilities).

Semester Ticket

At the moment, our university does not offer a semester ticket for the use of public transportation in Freiberg and Saxony. This allows us, among other things, to offer a comparatively low semester fee. The student body regularly holds votes on the semester ticket.

We recommend our students to consider the "Deutschland-Ticket" (Germany ticket)

The costs for the residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel or Aufenthaltserlaubnis) in Germany are regulated by the Residence Act. However, the exact amount of fees and costs can vary depending on the purpose of stay and individual circumstances. The costs for the initial issuance of a residence permit are usually around 100 euros (as of 2024). The immigration authorities are responsible for determining and collecting these costs.

In Germany, health insurance is mandatory for international students. Students can either opt for statutory health insurance (GKV) or private health insurance (PKV). Please note that it is important to arrange for appropriate health insurance well in advance of starting your studies.
