ERASMUS+ Top-ups for students
The European education programme Erasmus+ has declared inclusion and diversity as one of the most important objectives for the programme generation from 2021 to 2027. Erasmus+ follows a holistic concept of inclusion and aims to facilitate access to Erasmus+ for people who have not previously participated in the programme due to various barriers.
For certain target groups, there is the possibility to receive additional financial support - a so-called "social top-ups" - to cover additional expenses or needs. Different types of special funding can be applied for depending on the target group.
Another horizontal objective of the Erasmus programme in the programme generation from 2021 to 2027 is the promotion of sustainability. "Green travel" is therefore supported in the Erasmus+ programme with additional financial grants.
Types of top-ups
If you travel more than half of the way from Freiberg to the host organization and back by a sustainable means of transportation (e.g. bicycle, train, long-distance bus, carpool) you can apply for the "Green Travel" top-up. There is a one-time contribution for sustainable travel of €50 and additionally a maximum of 4 travel days can be claimed. The travel days on which you have traveled sustainably count as additional days of stay and will be financially supported with the valid daily rate of the corresponding country rate (subject to funds).
You may also apply for a top-up for green travel if you participate in a Blended Intensive Programme or another blended mobility.

Participants in an Erasmus mobility may purchase special Interrail passes: https://www.interrail.eu/en/interrail-passes/erasmus
Students with a degree of disability of 20 (GdB 20) or more can receive a top-up of €250 per month.
You may also apply for this kind of top-up if you participate in a Blended Intensive Programme or another blended mobility. The top-up is a one-time payment of €100 for a physical stay of 5 - 14 days, and €150 for a physical stay of 15 - 30 days.

If particularly high additional costs arise due to your stay abroad, a so-called "real cost application" can be submitted instead with a few months' notice, through which up to €15,000 per semester can be covered, e.g. for an accompanying person. It is also possible to receive a grant for a preparatory trip to explore the local conditions. This requires a lot of time in advance, so we ask students to seek advice early.
Students with a chronic illness that leads to additional financial needs for the stay abroad can also receive an additional €250 per month.
You may also apply for this kind of top-up if you participate in a Blended Intensive Programme or another blended mobility. The top-up is a one-time payment of €100 for a physical stay of 5 - 14 days, and €150 for a physical stay of 15 - 30 days.

Students who take their child or children abroad with them can also receive an additional €250 per month. The prerequisite is that the child or children is/are taken along during the entire stay. The allowance is €250 per month per family, regardless of the number of children. The application is also possible if a caregiver (partner) travels along.

Studies have shown that students whose parents have not already studied themselves are less likely to consider a stay abroad. With additional funding, the Erasmus programme aims to encourage these students to take the step abroad. In this case, students whose parents or caregivers do not have a degree from a university or university of applied sciences are considered first-time academics. €250 are available in addition to the regular monthly Erasmus grant.
A degree from a university-like university of cooperative education is considered an academic degree. Likewise, courses of study completed abroad count as academic degrees, even if they are not recognized in Germany. A master craftsman's diploma is not considered an academic degree.

Students who earn a significant amount of their own living may be reluctant to embark on a stay abroad, as they are often unable to continue working while abroad and earnings are lost. To alleviate this problem, there is now a top-up amount of €250 if the following criteria apply:
- employment subject to social insurance
- with net earnings of more than €450 and less than €850 in any month
- continuously employed for at least six months during the two semesters prior to the stay abroad
The activity must have taken place during this period:
Stay abroad in/from fall semester:
1 August of the previous year through 31 July of the year abroad
Stay abroad in spring semester:
1 February of the previous year through 31 January of the year abroad
The employment may be a single one or several immediately following each other. An interruption within the regular vacation period during employment is not a problem.
- the activity is not continued during the stay abroad, so that there is a loss of earnings

Please apply for funding by answering the relevant questions in the Mobility online portal and uploading the signed Honorary Declaration. Since funds are limited, it is generally not possible to apply after the grant agreement has been signed.
At the moment, your honorary declaration is sufficient as proof of eligibility. However, upon request, you must be able to provide supporting documents (depending on the additional funding, e.g. medical certificate, disability certificate, travel receipts, parents' declaration, salary slips or similar).
The social top-ups can all be combined with the green travel top-up. However, the 250-Euro top-up can only be awarded once, even if several criteria apply to you. Therefore, your Erasmus grant can consist at maximum of the following components:
Maximum support =
regular monthly rate for your country
+ if applicable one-time top-up of €50 for sustainable travel (plus up to 4 travel days)
+ if applicable top-up of €250 per month for groups below
