New opportunities through legislative changes

The Building Energy Act, which is to be reorganised as the Building Modernisation Act in future, is planning changes that will allow heating system owners to continue using their gas heating systems.

In order to achieve climate targets, more and more biomethane will have to be blended with natural gas in future.

Statutory quotas, known as green gas quotas, are set to lead to a significant increase in biomethane demand in the building sector from 2028. This will result in a growing demand for biomethane, which will open up new business areas.

Studies and associations see great market potential for this, which can only be achieved with new technologies such as optimised biogas upgrading.

In view of the growing demand for biomethane in buildings, transport, energy generation and industry, AEV Energy GmbH, Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg and Ansbach University of Applied Sciences have been jointly developing a sustainable and economically viable concept for biomethane production for over a year as part of the BioRED joint research project. This is aimed at the continued operation of existing agricultural biogas plants.

The aim is to achieve an economic perspective for existing biogas plants after the expiry of the Renewable Energy Sources Act subsidisation that goes beyond conventional electricity and heat generation.

On Thursday, 26 February 2026, all participants met at the BioRED conference. On Thursday, 26 February 2026, all project partners met to exchange results, discuss interfaces and prepare the interim report for the funding agency Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR), a project management agency of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
