What is 'Europe meets School'?
'Europe meets School' (EmS) is a unique program supported by the DAAD, aimed at promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding between international students and German schools. Through creative projects and personal encounters, EmS brings young people together. While EmS initially focused on European countries when it was launched in 2006, today international students from all over the world are welcome to present their home countries.

Our Mission
EmS supports students from all countries in presenting their home culture interactively in German classrooms. This takes place through a project lasting three to five lessons, giving pupils a vivid insight into other countries and traditions.
How does it work?
Registration: International students and teachers register individually via the website www.europamachtschule.de and are forwarded by the DAAD to our local team in Freiberg.
Coordination Meeting: The local team reviews the registrations and organizes a coordination meeting. At this meeting, international students and teachers get to know each other and are paired for their joint projects.
Project Implementation: The project partners coordinate individually to carry out the EmS project in the classroom. International students prepare the content, while the teacher supports organizational aspects. The Freiberg local team provides guidance throughout the entire project duration.
Final Meeting: At the end of the EmS program year, all participating students and teachers at the Freiberg site meet to share and discuss the outcomes of their projects.
Who can participate?
International Students: International students from all countries who are enrolled in Germany and wish to introduce their culture to German school classes.
Teachers: Teachers from schools across Germany who are open to intercultural projects and cooperation. Classes of all age groups and school types are eligible to participate.
German-speaking Students: Students from German universities who want to support international exchange as part of the Freiberg local team and take part in the local coordination of EmS.
Why participate?
For International Students: A unique opportunity to gain valuable teaching and presentation experience, build cultural bridges, and get to know Germany better.
For Teachers: An enrichment of classroom teaching through authentic insights into the culture of other countries in Europe and beyond.
For German-speaking Students: A great opportunity to collaborate with the DAAD, expand their network across Germany, and gain experience in event organization and public relations.
All EmS participants also receive a certificate at the end of the program year, recognizing their voluntary involvement.

Review of the 2024/25 Projects
As the Freiberg site (Standortteam Freiberg), we participated in EmS for the first time in the 2025/26 program year. In total, four exciting projects were carried out at schools in Freiberg and the surrounding area. The thematic focus was on cultural, religious, geographical, and historical aspects of the home countries of the international students and how these relate to Germany and Europe.
The implemented projects were:
- Discovering Kenya – Its Culture and Landscape Through the Eyes of German Students by Eva, Peter, and Eric from Cameroon in a 5th-grade class at Samuel-von-Pufendorf-Gymnasium Flöha
- History and Current Relations Between Benin and France by Oster from Benin in a 12th-grade class at Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Freiberg
- Knowledge and Understanding About Africa and Cameroon by Cédric from Cameroon in a 12th-grade class at Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Freiberg
- Hinduism by Jill from India in an 8th-grade class at Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Nossen
Feedback from Participants
"Participating as an international student in the 'Europa macht Schule' project was a truly wonderful experience. I was able to tell the students in Nossen about my religion, and they were very interested in learning more."

"Thanks to TU Bergakademie, we in Freiberg have the great fortune of welcoming people from all over the world, and through the 'Europa macht Schule' program, we can now experience this diversity at our gymnasium. The visit of the Francophone students from Benin and Cameroon was a great enrichment for our lessons. The students were particularly interested in insights into daily life and the cultural specifics of the two countries."

"EmS is a fantastic opportunity to engage locally and directly in openness, tolerance, and cultural exchange, while also experiencing what it is like to be part of a larger network, working hand in hand with the DAAD and meeting like-minded people at events across Germany."
