Meet Maximilian Petry, a TUBAF student from IART who went to Pittsburg State University in the USA for an exchange semester.

International

"The USA is a country of diversity and fascinating discoveries. Through contact with my fellow students from all over the world, I learn a lot about different cultures. Whether it's through conversations with fellow American students, excursions with my friends from Taiwan or enjoying authentic Indian cuisine with my Indian friends - I make valuable contacts that enrich my world view.

This year, the "Global Fest" took place for the second time at Pittsburg State University. At this event, different countries present their cultures through traditional clothing, culinary delights, rousing music and fascinating dances. Not only was I able to engage in conversations here, but I also had the opportunity to take a look at different parts of the world. I have also been able to attend many other events such as football games, homecoming and bar nights. However, American food is a challenge for me and I miss the taste of German cuisine.

Studying at Pittsburg State University is very different from studying at TUBAF. The courses are extremely practice-orientated and are largely based on case studies. Theory and mathematical concepts play a subordinate role. I am particularly fascinated by my "International Business" module, in which we deal in depth with important aspects of international business, cooperation and the effects of globalisation. The university impresses me with its modern facilities, especially the numerous group workstations. I make intensive use of these and look forward to exploring the new possibilities in our new library when I return to Freiberg. The exams here in the USA mainly consist of multiple-choice questions. Although this is unfamiliar at first, you quickly get used to this system. Nevertheless, the semester requires significantly more commitment, as each module also includes alternative assessments such as quizzes or case studies in addition to the exams.

I consider myself lucky to have this opportunity to enrich my studies and gain new experiences. The experiences and contacts I am making here are unique and will stay with me for the rest of my life. An exchange programme is much more than just an academic experience. Of course, I am also continuously improving my English skills during my stay in the USA. At the beginning, communication was a little uncertain for many of us, but gradually we all got used to speaking in English.

I'm looking forward to seeing you again in Germany. I am confident that everything I am learning here will have a significant place in my further studies and my future professional life.'
