Task
The Committee for Ethics in Security-Related Research provides TUBAF scientists with assessments and recommendations on the implementation of research activities with potential security relevance or existing risks of misuse upon request. This concerns research topics and projects whose results could potentially be used for criminal or military applications or for human rights violations or unethical purposes (so-called dual-use problems). Following consultation, the committee can issue ethics opinions, some of which are required for research funding. However, it also provides guidance and reassurance for researchers making enquiries independently of this.
Members
Members of the Commission are the respective voting members of the TUBAF Rectorate Research Commission.
Procedure
Enquiries to the Commission are received by the Office of the Prorectorate Research, International Affairs and Transfer. Enquiries can be submitted informally. They should include a brief description of the research topic or project in question as well as details of any cooperation partners and exploitation plans. The applicant should also describe any ethical and safety concerns as well as measures planned to minimise risks. The Prorectorate for Research, International Affairs and Transfer will submit these documents to the commission, supplemented by further analyses if necessary. After consultation in the committee, the applicant receives a written statement with recommendations. The procedure is free of charge for the applicant.
