Based on preliminary studies the FerrOx project aims to further develop iron oxide catalysts for the selective combustion of NH3 to NO and validate them in a process-oriented environment. The goal is to replace the cost-intesnive platinum/rhodium catalysts currently used for this technology. NH3 combustion to NO is the core unit of the industrial nitric acid production. Nitric acid is one of the 10 most important inorganic comodity chemicals and is primarily used for the production of fertilizers. The production of nitric acid thus ensures the food supply for humanity.
