Field of Expertise:
Fluid mechanics researches the movement of liquids and gases. Fluid mechanics knowledge is required, for example, to determine the air resistance of vehicles, the lift of aeroplanes or the necessary pump capacity in pipelines.
In turbomachines, the movement of liquids and gases is used for technical purposes. Fluid machinery includes, for example, pumps, compressors, wind turbines and hydropower plants.
History
Julius Ludwig Weisbach (1806 - 1871) established fluid mechanics in Freiberg and his outstanding work gave his name to the Weisbach-Bau institute building. Among other things, he was the first to formulate the correct relationship for the pressure loss in pipe flows. The Darcy-Weisbach equation, also named after him, is the central formula for the hydraulics of pipe flows.
