Ninth International Conference on the History of the Rhine as an Economic Region
“The RHIN(e)” is a working group of academics specialising in the economic and social history of the Rhine economic region, which has organised nine conferences since 2009. This working group originated from a group of economic and social historians at the Universities of Utrecht and Frankfurt am Main. Over time, the group has expanded, with historians from all over the world attending the conferences on various key topics. In addition to the countries bordering the Rhine, scholars from the USA, China and Japan, for example, were also represented. This time, the chair for economic and social history at the TUBAF is one of the co-organizers of the conference.
Colleagues from the Netherlands, Germany, France, Norway, China and the USA presented their findings at a conference held in Shanghai in 2017 on the theme ‘A Comparative Reflection on the Yangtze River and the Rhine’, which resulted in a publication of the same name (Shanghai 2018). In 2017, the German-Dutch organisers of the ‘RHIN(e)’ project published the volume ‘The Rhine: A Transnational Economic History’ (Nomos-Verlag).
The plan is to present recent research findings, primarily from early-career researchers, on topics that have not yet played a major role within the Rhine Economy framework, but which are highly relevant to the field of economic and social history in light of recent research priorities and, where applicable, controversies (e.g. colonial trade, ecology, taxation).
