Motivation and project goals
The growing use of CFRP also requires a higher value placed on recycling. The aim of the WIR-V1.2 joint project is to plan a processing plant for fibre recovery by means of pyrolysis for CFRP, which has been difficult to recycle to date. The focus is on a low energy requirement for the recycling process and a high quality of the recovered carbon fibres. Based on the recording of the waste condition, its material and granulometric properties and with the aid of the required recyclate quality, the results of the IART sub-project are incorporated into the design of the processing plant.
Tasks of the IART
The work at the IART primarily relates to mechanical waste pre-treatment and conveyor technology and includes preliminary tests. Following the systematic characterisation of the CFRP waste, shredding, classification and sorting processes are investigated and further developed. There is also a technological gap in the dosing and gentle handling of the recycled carbon fibres, which is being addressed by the IART.
Optional funding note
The joint project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and supervised by Project Management Jülich.
