At the end of February, our professorship of Reaction Engineering conducted an excursion to Wacker Chemie AG Nünchritz, which was organized in cooperation with Prof. Kroke from the Inorganic Chemistry of TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The lectures of Dr. Daniela Gerlach, Dr. Georgia Wollmann and Vanessa Dietze provided detailed insights into the processes of siloxane and silicone production as well as career opportunities for our graduated students. A special highlight was the factory tour, which addressed the Müller-Rochow process, the subsequent thermal product separation as well as the hydrolysis and polymerization units. We would like to thank Vanessa Dietze and her colleagues for the organization and the friendly and competent presentations and discussions. The excursion perfectly rounded up the module Industrial Chemistry within the Process Engineering/Chemical Engineering study course. This module includes the basics of silicon production, Müller-Rochow process and silicone/siloxane synthesis. Last but not least, we would like to thank our faculty for kindly covering the travel costs.
