Spring Academy Mathematics 2025

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science has been organising the Spring Academy of Mathematics, a project week for students interested in mathematics, since 1993. The Spring Academies have long been held annually after the winter semester.
In addition to lectures and exercises on exciting mathematical topics that show how interesting and useful mathematics can be, this type of "taster course" also offers the opportunity to gain a concrete picture of the requirements of studying mathematics and student life in Freiberg through discussions with students and staff. In addition, the supporting programme offers participants the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the historical sights of Freiberg.
Due to the level of mathematical knowledge required, the Spring Academy is aimed at pupils from year 10 onwards. We particularly welcome participation if there is a strong interest in studying mathematics or if undecided pupils can be supported in their decision to study mathematics.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with the contact person listed below. We would be delighted if you would draw the attention of like-minded friends and acquaintances to our offer or, if you are a teacher, if you would approach students who you think might be interested.
The next spring academy will take place from 3 March to 7 March 2025.
Tasks
The best way to understand maths is by solving problems. As a student with an interest in maths, you are sure to enjoy puzzling. As an applicant for the Spring Academy, we therefore give you the opportunity to actively engage with maths in advance. We do not expect you to solve all the problems, nor do we necessarily expect a complete and perfect solution - choose something that suits you best. Together with your application (see below), please send us your thoughts on solving at least one of the following problems. We will check your solutions and give you advice if necessary.
Application
Please send the completed first two pages of the following application form together with your solution to at least one of the tasks published above scanned (preferably as a PDF file) by 24 January 2025 to
uwe [dot] weber [at] math [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de with the subject "Application Spring Academy".
Please use the address that we should then use to send you the latest information about the Spring Academy.
