Research centre for a greenhouse gas-neutral circular economy

The Technical Universities of Freiberg, Dresden and Chemnitz and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are combining their expertise to establish a state-of-the-art research campus for a greenhouse gas-neutral circular economy (CircEcon) in the Schwarze Pumpe industrial park. Leading scientists are pooling their expertise in the fields of recycling and closed-loop management in this interdisciplinary facility. The aim is to develop a demonstration factory that is unique in Europe, serving as a driver of innovation and creating new economic prospects for the Lusatia region.

Motivation and project goals

The need to drive forward the transition to a greenhouse gas-neutral economy is a top priority in the face of climate change and dwindling resources. At the same time, the global challenge of the circular economy offers a significant opportunity to tap into innovation potential and strengthen economic value creation in the region. Against this backdrop, the project aims to strategically network Saxony's leading research expertise in the field of the circular economy and develop innovative solutions for the sustainable use of raw materials. The close cooperation between science and industry makes it possible to create practice-oriented technologies that not only meet environmental requirements, but also increase the competitiveness of companies in Saxony and beyond.

The project aims to link Saxony's research expertise in a targeted manner, such as the development of a closely networked innovation ecosystem by pooling scientific expertise in the areas of recycling, material cycles and climate protection. Furthermore, the promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation between universities, colleges and companies in order to maximise synergy effects is desirable. Another goal is the development and industrialisation of innovative approaches, e.g. the design and optimisation of pilot lines, test facilities and demonstration systems that enable an efficient circular economy. This also includes working with companies to bring innovative technologies and processes to market maturity and promote their widespread implementation. The integration of modern methods, such as the use of artificial intelligence and digitalisation to control and optimise processes along the entire value chain, are essential here. The development and application of innovative energy management systems to maximise resource efficiency and minimise energy consumption is also essential. Another key objective is to close the material cycle on an industry-relevant scale. The strengthening of the Lusatia region is to be realised through the creation of a demonstration factory that is unique in Europe and serves as an innovation driver and flagship project for sustainable economic development. New jobs and economic prospects are to be created.

This project combines scientific progress with practical application and makes a decisive contribution to establishing a sustainable, greenhouse gas-neutral circular economy at regional, national and European level.

Tasks of the IART

TUBAF's IART has the particular function of realising innovative approaches in the field of mechanical recycling of lightweight structures. This includes composite disintegration, comminution, classification and sorting as well as the refinement of the products by means of fine grinding and agglomeration. Some of the systems and machines planned for this project are still in the market launch phase or are being customised to meet specific requirements. The aim is to implement the latest and most advanced technology in each case.

Funding information

The funding bodies are the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism and the Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development.
