In contrast to Germany’s “Energiewende”, energy systems in many developing countries are (still) characterized by a heavy dependency on fossil fuel (with the exception of large hydro), insufficient generation capacity and grid connections, frequent power cuts, expensive back-up systems, monopoly structures and lack of private investors. Given these problems, however, governments in many of these countries change their energy policies with the aims of (i) promoting renewable energy technologies, (ii) creating (competitive) energy markets (iii) and motivating entrepreneurship and investors. As a result, in many developing countries, renewable energy technologies are considered as challenging and innovative for the provision of electricity.
The seminar will give an opportunity to participants to learn about
- Recent research on PV technologies, both at laboratory and pilot plant levels become briefed on current developments in Germany’s “Energiewende”: Policy and legal developments, current status of the renewable energy industry, position of renewable energy in the energy markets, players in renewable industry, future outlook
- Selected innovations in PV technologies and PV applications: (i) small-sized “plug-in” PV plants for self-consumption, (ii) smart batteries with less chemical stress, (iii) Agro-Photovoltaics for the dual use of arable land, (iv) large-scale PV applications in mining, (v) new business models for decentralized off-grid PV applications
- Networking with representatives from government, (Energy Agencies), industry associations (Chamber of Commerce) and business firms (manufacturers and project developers) dealing with PV technologies and applications
- Visits of laboratories, pilot plants, companies and projects with personal communication
- Interacting with other participants and their work and projects
The seminar is organized as a preparation to the visit to the trade fair The Smarter E Europe in Munich. This is the most important innovation hub for new energy solutions, dedicating itself to all topics relevant for the industry, offering visitors a comprehensive overview of trends, technologies and innovative concepts for the new energy world. It brings together four exhibitions:
- Intersolar Europe – The world's leading exhibition for the solar industry
- ees Europe – Europe’s largest and most international exhibition for batteries a. energy storage systems
- Power2Drive Europe – The international exhibition for charging infrastructure and e-mobility
- EM-Power – The exhibition for intelligent energy use in industry and buildings
The seminar and trade fair visit are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) by funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The seminar is organized and hosted by the Faculty of Geosciences, Geoengineering and Mining, and the Chair of Environment and Recourses Management at Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg.

Your application (in English language) should emphasize your motivation and personal/professional benefit for your participation. You should illustrate how you plan to integrate the knowledge and experiences obtained at the seminar in Freiberg and the Munich event into your professional work and how you will involve stakeholders in your co-operation activities.

After a review by the local organizing committee and DAAD, invited participants will be notified at the end of February 2020 at the latest.
