Students who are expecting a baby are advised to inform the Student Office of their pregnancy. In addition, you should plan the further course of your studies in confidential contact with these contact persons.

  • Students' Office: study-related issues, e.g. clarification of the use of leave semesters
  • Education officers and/or deans of studies: if necessary, e.g. agreement on an individualised study plan or preparation of a risk assessment

Information for students with children

With the "family-friendly university audit", TUBAF has also set itself the goal of offering family-friendly lecture and seminar times for student parents as far as possible.

Contact persons in the faculty

Students who are caring for their child/children at the university and are therefore restricted in terms of time when attending courses should contact their responsible education officer to discuss their situation (time restrictions, compulsory subjects to be taken, etc.).

Theses

In the information sheet "Pregnancy & Thesis" summarises some important information.

Legal regulations

All information on legal regulations, funding, the organisation of your studies, contact persons and much more can also be found in a clear format in the brochure "Studying with a child".

Note that the Maternity Protection Act applies to you. The maternity protection that begins with your pregnancy also means that you are exempt from the examination requirement, provided that you have notified the university of your pregnancy. The earlier the pregnancy is reported to the relevant authorities, the more effective the maternity protection can be. Based on the notification, the university will carry out an individual risk assessment of the student's working conditions and initiate the necessary protective measures. This is particularly important if laboratory practicals are required as part of the degree programme, in which the handling of hazardous substances cannot be ruled out.

Studying abroad with a child

The Working Group Study Conditions and International Affairs of the association "Familie in der Hochschule e.V." has created an Internet portal for students with children who are planning to study abroad, which provides practical information on the organisation, financing and implementation of studying abroad with children. This page also contains testimonials from students who have already studied abroad with a child.

Digital teaching programmes

With the aim of improving the compatibility of family and studies, additional digital learning opportunities are offered in addition to the regular on-campus programme. The focus is primarily on internships that cannot be attended by expectant mothers or student parents due to their content (laboratory internships in chemistry and materials science may not be carried out by pregnant women due to maternity protection regulations) or because they are carried out during so-called off-peak times (times outside the opening hours of daycare centres).

Social counselling

The Studentenwerk supports students with information on the following topics:

  • Child benefit
  • Parental allowance
  • Maternity protection periods
  • Leave of absence
  • Other social assistance and support
  • Living with a child
  • Childcare

The Studentenwerk homepage also provides an overview of the topic "Studying with a child".
