Care situations can place a heavy burden on students, even if they are not providing care alone. Even if you think you can combine studying, everyday life and caring well, it cannot be ruled out that mental and physical illnesses will develop over time. For this reason, taking on the care of relatives should be discussed as early as possible with university lecturers, responsible persons of the modules, assigned officials for education and the student office. On the basis of individual decisions, compensation for disadvantages such as extended deadlines for student projects and (final) theses, alternative examinations, exemption from attendance requirements, withdrawal from or postponement of examinations at short notice or even an individual study plan can be agreed. This can also include preferential registration for lectures and seminars as well as exemption from attendance requirements. Applications for compensation for disadvantages must be submitted to the Student Office for a decision by the Examination Board.
It is also possible to study part-time if the examination regulations of the degree programme allow this. Studies can also be interrupted (semester of leave). In both cases, however, students do not receive BAföG (maintenance grant by the Federal Education Assistance Act). However, students on leave of absence can apply for unemployment benefit II (Arbeitslosengeld II) and other social benefits.
