Field trips are an important part of the faculty’s culture and provide students and staff with a vital opportunity to engage with partners from industry and society. They offer a valuable complement to the traditional curriculum, enriching the learning process and promoting students’ professional development. For this reason, students at our faculty are required to undertake a certain number of field trips, depending on their field of study.
Below are some insights into field trips that have already taken place:
From copper powder to XXL components in additive manufacturing
Students at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg discovered just how versatile modern additive manufacturing can be during a two-day field trip to Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz. As part of the module ‘Selected Topics in Additive Manufacturing’, they visited Rapidobject GmbH, Additive Drives GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU).
Insights into the development of bespoke grinding plants at Jehmlich
How is an industrial plant designed that is precisely tailored to a specific raw material and a customer’s requirements? During a field trip to Gebr. Jehmlich GmbH, 13 students from the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering degree programmes gained an insight into the development, manufacture and assembly of industrial crushing plants.
From the brewhouse to sensory analysis: students experience beer production first-hand
How is water, malt, hops and yeast turned into a finished beer? Twenty-two students from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg were able to follow the individual production stages first-hand at the technical facilities during an excursion to the Hartmannsdorf Brewery. The visit, which formed part of the ‘Wine and Beer Production’ module, combined the fundamentals of process engineering with practical insights into production, quality assurance and product development.
Excursion to Hartmannsdorf Brewery
The Institute of Energy Process Engineering organised a field trip for students to the Hartmannsdorf Brewery on 6 June 2025.
Field trip to Eisenhüttenstadt
Valuable insights into industrial processes and a clear picture of how engineers in various roles tackle current challenges – this is what TUBAF students Clara Zerbs and Fabian Bertram took away from a field trip to the Eisenhüttenstadt steelworks. ArcelorMittal is trialling the production of green steel there. The industrial excursion, involving a total of 11 students, was funded by the scholarship programme of the Centre for Efficient High-Temperature Matter Conversion (ZeHS).
Field Trip: Power Station Technology
On 29 January 2025, the Institute of Energy Process Engineering organised a field trip for students to the “Nossener Brücke” combined heat and power plant as part of the “Power Plant Engineering” course.
Visit to the ACHEMA trade fair and Industriepark Höchst
From 10 to 12 June 2024, a group of just under 20 students from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg took part in a field trip to ACHEMA and the Höchst Industrial Park in Frankfurt am Main. The excursion was organised by ITUN.
SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz GmbH
Students from our faculty, as well as from the Institute of Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering, visited SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz on 2 May 2024.
Wacker Chemie, Nünchritz
At the end of February 2024, our Chair of Reaction Engineering organised a field trip to Wacker Chemie AG in Nünchritz.
BASF Schwarzheide
On 19 October 2023, the excursion to BASF Schwarzheide – which is very popular with students – took place. As in previous years, BASF was a wonderful host and had prepared a very interesting and varied programme for us.
