Mine planning
Project duration and partners
Since 2020 - Basalt AG
Project description
Our research in the field of underground mine planning covers all areas of an underground mine. Key topics include, among others:
- Excavation and equipment
- Extraction technology
- Extraction and logistics
- Extension and safety
- Ventilation
- Safety and rescue works
- Infrastructures
- Technical equipment
- Replacement
- Custody of mines
In various projects, we work on mine planning projects at all stages of mine planning. The spectrum ranges from feasibility studies to detailed concepts for the development of new mines, expansion planning for existing mines and the optimisation or redesign of sub-processes in mine operations.
Current research foci
In mine planning, our current research foci are:
- Optimisation of planning methods
- Use of digital planning tools
- Development of algorithms and tools for decision-making in mine planning
- Development of tools for the automated, technical and economic calculation of mining projects
- Mine planning and control to optimise ventilation and compliance with limit values
- Digitalisation and automation of mining processes
Planning tools
We use state-of-the-art planning tools and mine planning software. We use Maptek Vulcan for three-dimensional mine planning and Ventsim for the simulation of mine ventilation. We also offer training in the use of this software. If required, working on physical models of mines or mine sections supports the planning tasks.
References
For research in the field of mine planning, we work directly with industrial partners and mining companies and conduct research exclusively on real projects. We are currently working together on projects both in Germany and abroad. Our students are closely involved in the research, both in the Mining Planning Civil Engineering seminar and in their coursework and dissertations. We currently have mining planning projects for the following deposits/mines, among others:
- Quartz porphyry mine Großsteinberg, Saxony, Germany (Basalt AG)
- Gold deposit Fortuna, Chile (AURYN MINING CORPORATION)
We have worked on numerous projects in recent years, a small selection of which are shown below:
- Lithium deposit Zinnwald, Saxony, Germany (Deutsche Lithium GmbH)
- Polymetallic tin-tungsten deposit Pöhla-Globenstein (Saxony Minerals & Exploration AG)
- Polymetallic skarn deposit Hämmerlein-Tellerhäuser, Saxony, Germany (Saxore Bergbau GmbH)
- Rare earth deposit, Ondoto, Namibia (Gecko Namibia)
- Okorusu fluorspar deposit, Namibia (Gecko Namibia)
- Opuwo copper-cobalt deposit, Namibia (Gecko Namibia)
- Lofdal rare earth deposit, Namibia (Gecko Namibia)
- Grosse Île connecting mine for the Mines Seleine rock salt mine, Canada (K+S AG)
