Integrated Geoscientific Characterization and Cross-Border Assessment of the Petrovice–Döbra Zone (Inge-PDZ)
In the border region between Saxony and the Czech Republic, the Petrovice-Döbra Zone (PDZ)—a major tectonic structure—runs through the Erzgebirge Mountains. This is a large-scale fault zone in which the mountain range is divided into a mosaic of small blocks. Several cross-border projects are planned in the region that could be significantly affected by this tectonic structure. These include for example the rail tunnel for the planned new Dresden–Prague line. The goal of the project is to comprehensively characterize the PDZ and its surroundings through geophysical and hydrogeological investigations and to make the geoscientific results accessible to various stakeholders.
The Chair of Engineering Geology and Environmental Geotechnics is developing a cross-border geographic information system (GIS) as well as a 3D geological subsurface model of the PDZ area and the Gottleuba Valley. This model provides a detailed representation of the geological structures, particularly the PDZ. The spatial distribution and 3D representation of subsurface structures are crucial for understanding how groundwater interacts with and influences deep underground structures such as tunnels and mines. The GIS and the 3D model also facilitate the cross-border exchange of geoinformation, such as the results of the geophysical and hydrogeological investigations conducted as part of the project. The project is also developing a strategy to ensure that future updates to the models can be implemented consistently by the geological services. This will significantly facilitate the exchange of new data and thus ensure that the data sets on both sides of the border are consistent and up-to-date at all times.
