The Freiberg University Library has come up with a pioneering idea on how libraries can use artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise processes in their everyday library work. Today (12 December 2025), it will receive the Library Prize 2025 from the Saxon State Minister for Culture and Tourism, Barbara Klepsch, and the Chairman of the Board of the Saxony Library Association, Lars Rohwer. The Freiberg University Library will be using the prize money of 10,000 euros to realise its pioneering idea. In an interview, the head of the library, Dr Julia Meyer, explains the role AI will play in behind -the-scences library processes.

What's the new solution for efficient library processes about and where does AI come into play?

Artificial intelligence offers valuable support and can be used profitably in many areas. Freiberg University Library has recognised this potential and developed "ALIMA" (AI-powered Library Indexing and Metadata Assignment), a tool for AI-supported subject indexing based on large language models. Indexing is one of the traditional core tasks of librarians, who use keywords to accurately describe media. The standardised vocabulary for this is managed by the German National Library as a common standards file.

Will other libraries also profit from the tool in the future?

In order to support other libraries on their path to a future-oriented way of working, the idea of a comprehensive multiplier programme was born. The ‘train-the-trainer’ workshop is divided into four modules: from the basics of AI use to a practical example from the Freiberg University Library to the joint development of the participating libraries' own ideas. The approach is application-oriented and combines theory and practice. Aim of the project is to impart AI skills in a sustainable manner. After completing the modules, participants will be able to pass on the knowledge they have acquired in their own institutions and thus actively contribute to the transfer of knowledge.

What role does the research environment at TU Bergakademie Freiberg play as a place for digital innovation?

TU Bergakademie Freiberg stands for strong digital skills and future-oriented use of artificial intelligence. Our project idea fits seamlessly into this profile. We are delighted to be able to actively contribute to this digital strength of the university.
