For more than 15 years, Professor Ralf Hielscher and an international team at TU Bergakademie Freiberg have been developing the open source software MTEX. "MTEX utilises the latest methods of image processing and harmonic analysis for the mathematical description of polycrystalline materials and their properties. MTEX is used both at TU Freiberg and worldwide in industry and research to analyse electron microscopy images," says mathematician Hielscher.

The applications range from minerals and rocks in geology to highly specialised steel, titanium or magnesium alloys in materials science and biological objects such as mussel shells or teeth.

Workshop further develops software

Scientists from almost 20 countries are meeting at a workshop at TU Bergakademie Freiberg until 12 March 2026 to further develop the open source software together. The interdisciplinary collaboration on the software is an example of the interdisciplinary, applied focus of mathematics at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
