Eight handball teams from Saxon universities will compete against each other at the tournament on 30 May. The university championship is supported by the club HSG Freiberg; organised by the University Sports Centre at TUBAF. Health manager Maxi Wilde (currently on parental leave), who is involved in the Saxony University Sports Conference, explains what makes handball so exciting to watch.

Last year, the Saxon University Handball Championship had its premiere in Freiberg. In 2026, the tournament will be held here again. What can spectators expect this year?

We are once again expecting several teams from different Saxon universities. So you can once again look forward to a rousing atmosphere and exciting matches for the Saxon university mixed handball crown.

We have our local handball club HSG Freiberg to thank for organising the event in Freiberg once again, as the Ernst-Grube-Halle provides the perfect infrastructure for hosting the Saxon University Championships. Admission is free!

In addition, compared to last year, we want to offer one or two "hands-on activities" in front of or in the foyer of the hall to involve spectators and participants even more interactively. The big award ceremony and a relaxed get-together in the foyer of the hall with cool drinks are planned for the afternoon.

Why is the sport so exciting for the audience?

Handball is an incredibly fast, high-scoring and physical sport, which makes it particularly attractive. There is no such thing as a 0:0 score in handball and even a 5-goal deficit can be made up very quickly within a few minutes. That's why a game often remains exciting until the final minutes and even the supposed underdog in good form can beat the favourite in poor form on the day.

There are also exciting duels in attack and defence in all playing positions. Thanks to the resin on the ball, which significantly improves grip on the hand, spectacular trick shots and jump shots are not uncommon.

What's so special about handball?

Although there is a healthy amount of toughness during a handball game, there are hardly any delays due to fouls or players lying on the ground for a long time. This makes the sport and those who are committed to handball likeable. Even after the game, there is a fair handshake or high-five between everyone involved - team spirit and respect are simply paramount in handball!
