The Institute of Metal Forming, which is currently headed by Prof. Dr Ulrich Prahl, looks back on a long tradition of teaching and research in forming technology. Since the appointment of Prof Emicke to the Chair of Rolling Mill Science and Transport Engineering in 1928, metal forming has been an integral part of teaching at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology.

The institute is part of the Faculty of Materials Science & Technology and is one of the largest and most well-funded institutes at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
