Obituary for Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Martin Hildebrand (1933 - 2025)
It is with deepest sympathy that we bid farewell to our former colleague
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Martin Hildebrand, who accompanied and shaped our institute for many decades.
After graduating in metal forming in 1959, he dedicated himself to scientific work. This was followed by his doctorate in 1969, his habilitation in 1988 and his appointment as an adjunct professor in 1993. Until his retirement in 2001, he was involved in teaching and contributed to numerous research projects.
His specialist expertise was incorporated into a large number of projects, including several DFG Priority Programmes. His work has focused on friction phenomena, the behaviour of materials and tools, as well as various issues relating to tool design and surface effects.
His energetic and sometimes unmistakably direct nature made him a distinctive figure in his field. He knew how to stand up for his convictions and achieve a great deal as a result.
We bid him farewell with respect and express our deepest sympathy to his family.
With a final "Glück Auf!"
All active and former employees of the Institute of Metal Forming

Metal moulding - tradition, creativity, perfection
The Institute of Metal Forming is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Prahl, who was appointed to the Chair of Forming Technology on 1 October 2017. This continues the long tradition of forming technology teaching at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which was established with the appointment of Prof. Emicke to the Chair of Rolling Mill Technology and Transport Engineering in 1928.
The research and teaching focus of the institute is on production technology for semi-finished metal products and focuses on the influence of forming technology on the material and on the interaction between forming technology and property development in the formed material. All areas of forming technology - from forging technology to flat and wire rolling to the numerical simulation of materials and processes - are covered.
