High participation in the measures workshop in June
News from August 6, 2025
The high level of participation by university members of all status groups in the measures workshop held as part of the “Future Forum for Climate-Friendly Universities” project on June 18, 2025, at the SIZ in Freiberg was highly praised by the responsible ZKH project coordinator from the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development: More than 30 students, lecturers, doctoral candidates, and administrative staff helped decide on the most promising measures. The basis for this was a catalog of more than 40 measures, which was based on the status quo report, the potential analysis, and numerous suggestions from university members. From this, the workshop participants identified key measures that will be further developed in the next step into concrete action profiles and roadmaps for greater sustainability and will ultimately be incorporated into the future climate protection concept.
Presentation of the "AG Fahrrad" and its self-help workshop
News from June 23, 2025
In connection with the ZKH project, a digital ideas box on climate protection and sustainability was set up, which has since received numerous suggestions and requests. In some cases, it turned out that the proposed idea already exists, just under a different name, with a slightly different focus, in an unexpected location or similar. As an example of this, we would like to take up the wish for a bicycle self-help workshop and introduce the "AG Fahrrad" on this occasion:
The "AG Fahrrad" is part of the student council of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and is therefore a student working group. In addition to regular excursions - e.g. to the Velocium trade fair - and a bicycle rental service, the members are dedicated to the maintenance and repair of bicycles. A well-equipped workshop is available for this purpose. Here you will not only find the right tools and aids, but also bike-enthusiastic students and staff.
The self-help workshop is located in the inner courtyard of the Julius Weisbach Building and is open every Tuesday from 16:30-18:00 and Thursday from 18:00-(19:00). Appointments at the self-help workshop can also be arranged via OPAL. At least one experienced mechanic from AG Fahrrad will be on site at each appointment to provide support with tools and useful tips.
As a member of the Bicycle Working Group, you can also get involved in the further development of cycling at TUBAF at regular meetings.
If you have any questions, please contact the Bicycle Working Group in person or via ag-fahrrad [at] stura [dot] tu-freiberg [dot] de (ag-fahrrad[at]stura[dot]tu-freiberg[dot]de).
Climate protection and sustainability - photovoltaic systems top the list
News from June 17, 2025
After a good two months, the digital ideas box on climate protection and sustainability at TUBAF, which was created as part of the ZKH project, has already been used 130 times. The frontrunners among the submissions are those on “Photovoltaic systems on university buildings”. This topic is obviously of particular interest to members of our university, but on closer inspection it proves to be unexpectedly complex, which has so far noticeably hindered the speed and scope of corresponding projects. Against this background, the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability and Communication would like to explain why the university buildings do not yet have photovoltaic systems and whether this will change in the future.
One crucial point before the parenthesis: The majority of university buildings are not owned by TUBAF, but by the Free State of Saxony. The Free State of Saxony in turn provides its universities, including TUBAF, with the properties and buildings free of charge to fulfill their statutory duties. However, the Saxon universities do not own the buildings. Rather, the accommodation of the university and the management of the properties is the responsibility of the Saxon State Enterprise for Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB) within the Saxon State Ministry of Finance. As a result, the university's ability to make changes to the buildings it uses is severely restricted.
In this respect, the (climate) strategy pursued by the Free State is of fundamental importance in the present context. Saxony's state administration should be largely climate-neutral by 2040 - according to the “Climate-conscious state administration master plan” adopted by the Saxon cabinet in July 2024. As over 80 percent of the state administration's greenhouse gas emissions result from the use of electricity, heating and cooling in over 1,500 buildings on more than 800 properties in the Free State, targeted measures are to be developed and implemented in the building and property sector in order to reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions - including in particular the increased use of renewable energies. For this reason, the authorities and educational institutions as well as other properties of the Free State of Saxony have been supplied with 100% electricity from renewable energy sources since 2023. To this end, the SIB carried out a Europe-wide tender, as a result of which two regional companies operating in Saxony were commissioned for three years.
In addition, new buildings are to be built with photovoltaic systems in mind from the outset, provided the necessary funds are available. With regard to the use of existing buildings, the SIB has carried out a potential analysis of all properties and buildings in its area of responsibility that are potentially suitable for photovoltaic systems. For this purpose, the solar potential register published by the Saxon Energy Agency SAENA was used, which maps the suitable roofs in the Free State and their potential electricity yield. A comparison with the SIB's building database provided an overview of the PV potential of the roof surfaces of the buildings in the SIB's area of responsibility. Based on this, a step-by-step investigation and utilization of the most potential existing roofs is now taking place. However, other legal regulations can make implementation more difficult: In particular, the Renewable Energy Sources Act prevents the SIB from feeding more than 100 kWp peak output per building connection into the upstream grid in most cases, as anyone who generates more electricity is considered a power plant operator or direct marketer. However, the SIB is not geared towards commercial electricity sales. In addition, a kilowatt hour of electricity fed into the grid is currently remunerated by the supplier at only 8 cents, but up to approx. 30 cents in electricity costs can be saved if you consume the electricity yourself. The primary goal is therefore to cover own consumption. However, purely internal consumption requires appropriate technical precautions, such as switching off at weekends. Interconnecting external operators can provide a remedy in some places, but in return involves specific liability risks.
Unfortunately, the problems do not end there: an additional challenge with the existing buildings made available to TUBAF is that most of them cannot be retrofitted with photovoltaics for structural reasons.
In view of the considerable restrictions on closer inspection, it is all the more pleasing that TUBAF can also hope to install photovoltaic systems: As a pilot project, a photovoltaic system is initially to be installed on the roof of the ZeH, for which the design plans are already being processed at the SIB. In addition, a system is to be installed on the roof of the Clemens-Winkler building as part of its renovation.
So although the obstacles are greater than they might seem at first glance, things are moving forward here too. And in view of the importance already attached to the topic, it is to be hoped that the two initial projects mentioned will be followed by others.

Ideas for a more sustainable university needed
Press release from 8 April 2025
The "Future Forum Climate-Friendly Universities (ZKH)" project has really picked up speed again in 2025. The aim of the project is to draw up a climate protection concept within the project period, which should provide for comprehensive measures in Action Area 1 of the Whole Institution Approach "Operations and Campus Management" in particular. By implementing the measures defined in the climate protection concept, at least 10% of the university's greenhouse gas emissions are to be saved.
In order to achieve this goal, it is now necessary to identify and subsequently implement targeted measures. The internal university task force accompanying the project has drafted an initial catalogue of measures, which will be successively supplemented by stakeholder meetings, bilateral discussions and the involvement of all university members. To facilitate the latter, a digital ideas box was created, which enables university members to contribute to the identification of measures.
On the way to a sustainable campus: TUBAF develops climate protection concept
Press release from 22 May 2024
The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is one of 15 universities in the Future Forum for Climate-Friendly Universities (ZKH). Students, staff and lecturers are working on a climate protection concept and outlining the path to a sustainable campus. Over the next three years, the funding will consist of training, counselling and network exchange. The aim is to reduce the university's own greenhouse gas emissions by at least ten per cent. In addition, a university climate protection concept is to be developed and implemented.
