With the start of the new semester, the programme Europa macht Schule (EmS) is entering its next round at the Freiberg site. International students present their home country to school classes in a creative way. The volunteer site team at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is now looking for committed students who would like to help organise international encounters in schools in the region.

The programme, which is coordinated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), promotes intercultural exchange and strengthens European and global cohesion. "After the initial discussions with the DAAD, it quickly became clear that we could make a difference with a dedicated team at the location. By setting up the Freiberg site, we at the International Office wanted to give our international students an additional opportunity to become actively involved in society and at the same time sensitise the region to European issues. The successful implementation of the first projects confirms that this commitment is worthwhile and has a lasting effect," says Marcus Dietrich, a member of staff at the International Office of TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Freiberg took part in the programme for the first time last year - with great success: four projects at schools in Freiberg, Flöha and Nossen dealt with topics such as the culture of Kenya, the history of Benin, the diversity of Cameroon and Hinduism.

Volunteering enables real encounters

"Europa macht Schule offers a wonderful opportunity to give young people in the region lively insights into other cultures and, at the same time, a forum for our international students to contribute their perspectives. This creates real encounters that strengthen cohesion in Europe and beyond," emphasises Dr Iuliia Sishchuk, Director of the International Office at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

The programme is organised by volunteer students at over 35 university locations across Germany. It is supported by the association Europa macht Schule e.V., the DAAD and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR).
