Dr Sabine Schellbach was Head of University Communications at TUBAF until the end of February. In this role, she was closely networked with all departments at the university and far beyond. This could also be seen at her retirement - so many guests from the university, city and society were invited that the farewell was celebrated in "shifts". Dr Sabine Schellbach has now taken her well-deserved retirement, but will remain at TU Bergakademie Freiberg as an honorary member of staff at the university library. In this Q&A, she talks about the transformation of university communication in the face of digital progress.

What was your most formative event at the university?

The opening of terra mineralia in 2008 was a particularly formative event for me. It was a huge event in which the entire city centre of Freiberg took part and celebrated. At the same time, Freudenstein Castle has become a real centre of attraction as a result.

What three emojis would you use to describe your time at TUBAF?

💬😊💡

Do you have a favourite place on campus?

My favourite place is the new university library on the science corridor. It has become a modern place of learning, student life and academic exchange.

Where on campus have you spent the most time?

This is definitely the 3rd floor in Prüferstraße 2 with the University Communication offices.

From student advisor to Head of University Communication: what has changed in university communication over the past few decades?

The formats of communication have changed considerably. It is important to actively and strategically shape the ongoing digitalisation. The decisive factor here is not only to utilise the channels and technologies, but also to use them in a target group-oriented, comprehensible and authentic way. At the same time, I am convinced that the dialogue-oriented formats and offers, such as the Campus Days or the Student University, will continue to have their place.

What would you not recommend to your successor?

I would not recommend tackling upcoming tasks, projects and changes without prioritising them. Especially at a small university, knowledge, experience and cooperation are great strengths that should not be neglected.

250 years of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Science and Business Night, TUBAF Festival, "What does democracy mean (to us)?" ... You have thought up and planned numerous university events. Which ones do you remember most fondly and why?

In addition to the university anniversary in 2015, I have particularly fond memories of the "Night of Science", which took place for the first time in 2007 and has since become an integral part of scientific life in Freiberg. It has become a genuine Freiberg event that offers exciting insights into research and study and at the same time involves the regional economy. On 12 June, the tenth "Night of Science and Business" will take place on campus along the science corridor.

If you were to decide again today: Which degree programme at TUBAF would you choose?

Not so easy. I would probably opt for the Nanotechnology or Space Resources degree programme.
