Saxony’s Minister of Science, Sebastian Gemkow, visited the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on August 11, 2026. During his full-day visit, he was able to gain insight into the current research at TUBAF and experience what makes this “resource university” so special.
Upon entering the “Reiche Zeche” research and teaching mine, the minister not only learned about the history of mining but also how the unique infrastructure enables cutting-edge research today - for example, in robotics, AI-supported drilling technology, and innovative methods for extracting critical raw materials, such as bioleaching. Another stop was the underground shock wave laboratory with a blasting chamber at the Freiberg High-Pressure Research Center (FHP). The minister also learned about research on white hydrogen and smart exploration techniques, after which he toured the geophysics department’s Vibroseis vehicle and the Scientific Diving Center’s new diving container
“I am very pleased to welcome Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow to TU Bergakademie Freiberg. This working visit took place during my first term as president and provided a good opportunity to discuss higher education policy issues and the strategic development of our university with the minister. At the same time, we were able to highlight the TU Bergakademie Freiberg’s particular strength as a resource-based university,” said Rector Dr. Jutta Emes.
