The University Medal is one of the highest honours awarded by TU Bergakademie Freiberg to members of the university. Today (28 October 2025), the university awarded this honour to Professor Carsten Drebenstedt.
"For over a quarter of a century, Professor Carsten Drebenstedt has played a key role in shaping the development of our university and the Faculty of Geosciences, Geotechnics and Mining. Through his tireless scientific work, his commitment to teaching and young academics, as well as his work across disciplinary and national borders, he has contributed greatly to the reputation and international appeal of TUBAF," explained Rector Professor Jutta Emes at the award ceremony.
His commitment to the European University Alliance EURECA-PRO is exemplary of his international engagement. Since 1999, Carsten Drebenstedt has been Head of the Chair of Opencast Mining at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Drebenstedt has been an elected member of the Senate several times since 2000, he was Vice-Rector for Research from 2000 to 2006 and Dean of the Faculty from 2013 to 2016. As Dean of Studies and Chairman of the Examination Boards and Study Commissions, he assumed responsibility for the further development of several degree programmes.
The University Medal of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and exceptional achievements in the service of the university. It honours individuals who have made a significant contribution to the further development of the university and its community. Membership of the University is a prerequisite for the award. The medal is awarded on the basis of the basic regulations of TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
In 2025, Professors Jörg Matschullat and Michael Schlömann also received a TUBAF University Medal.
